Art historian Dr. Phyllis Hattis will serve as our 2026 Annual Meeting speaker. Hattis will talk about her partnership with her late husband, William Rubin, the legendary Chief Curator of Painting and Sculpture of the Museum of Modern Art for 21 years following its founding director, Alfred Barr, who chose Bill as his successor. Before joining Bill in New York City, Dr. Hattis studied at Harvard amidst the great art at The Fogg Museum, writing her doctoral dissertation on Ingres and the Development of Modernism ca. 1800. In 1970 she received a Ford Foundation Fellowship to join The Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco as a Visiting Curator and published Four Centuries of French Drawings in 1977. She moved to New York City in 1986 and continued to build her career not only publishing scholarly and critical essays for exhibition catalogues, books and art journals, but also advising museums, corporations and collectors on building public and private collections.

Their shared passion for art is described in her illustrated volume Masterpieces The William Rubin Collection: Dialogue of the Tribal and the Modern, distributed in 2024. Over the course of 40 years of life together, they formed their private collection featuring works by Picasso, Matisse, Warhol, Dubuffet, Giacometti, Calder, Miró, Frank Stella, Jasper Johns, Richard Serra, & more.
