Virtual Voyage: Exploring the Places that Influenced Charles Demuth’s Work

Virtual Exhibition

Born in Lancaster, Pennsylvania in 1883, Charles Demuth found inspiration in his hometown throughout his lifetime. As an adult, Demuth traveled beyond Lancaster County’s borders where he continued to be influenced by his environment. To satiate his adventurous spirit, these travels included various locations in the northeast United States, multiple trips to Europe, and even an excursion to Bermuda. Often Demuth found respite by the water, whether looking out to sea in France, relaxing on the beach in Provincetown, or spending time along the Susquehanna River.

Wherever his journeys led him, he remained grounded in Lancaster’s varied and lush scenery to fuel his creative ambitions and always returned to his studio, home, and mother.

From the Archives: The Photography of Ferdinand Demuth

Ferdinand Demuth, father of Charles Demuth, took up photography during the 1890’s and produced both photographic prints and lantern slides. As a member of the Lancaster Camera Club, Ferdinand captured the changing landscape of the modern era in Lancaster City and the surrounding areas. The photographs on view are modern prints made from Demuth’s glass negatives that are part of the Demuth Museum’s archive collection.

Capturing Community: Inside an American Salon

This special exhibition will explore Charles Demuth's peers in the Stieglitz Circle and their influential work that formed the American Modern Art movement in the early 20th century. Through loans from the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Art Bridges Collection, and private collections, 12 works of painting and photography will be paired with pieces from the Demuth Museum collection to compare and contrast artists' styles and techniques. Capturing Community offers glimpses into the artists' lives and inspirations while telling the story of how they are all connected through one man -- Alfred Stieglitz.

This is one in a series of American art exhibitions created through a multi-year, multi-institutional partnership formed by the Philadelphia Museum of Art as part of the Art Bridges Cohort Program.
