Our Mission
The Museum of Art preserves and promotes the groundbreaking work of American Modern artist Charles Demuth; showcases the work of local, national, and international artists to the Lancaster community; and inspires new generations through its programs. The collections, exhibitions, educational programs, and public initiatives of our multiple facilities foster creativity and appreciation of art and artists.
Our Vision
Our vision is an inspired community where all recognize their inherent creativity and the arts foster a dialogue to enhance the quality of life in Lancaster.
Our History
The Demuth Museum and the Lancaster Museum of Art have come together under one name as a united artistic force to form Demuth Museum of Art.
Founded on the groundbreaking work of American Modern artist Charles Demuth, the museum’s collections, exhibitions, and programs at Demuth Museum of Art cultivate artistic expression and cultural education for all.
In 1981, the Demuth Museum was founded, focusing on the life and work of one of the leading American Modernist painters, Charles Demuth (1883-1935), and his family. The Demuth Museum of Art maintains the 260+ year-old Demuth family properties in the heart of historic downtown Lancaster, which are contributing structures to a National Register Historic District and recognized as part of the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s Historic Artists’ Homes and Studios Program.
The Lancaster Museum of Art traces its roots back to 1965 when a group of local artists formed the Goethean Gallery on the campus of Franklin & Marshall College. In 1979, the Community Art Gallery took up residence in the former Grubb Mansion in Musser Park, and in 1996 became the Lancaster Museum of Art. It has a long-standing history of exhibiting local artists and offering educational workshops.
In 2014, the Demuth Museum and the Lancaster Museum of Art merged under one nonprofit structure. In 2026, the two museums were unified under one name - the Demuth Museum of Art.
Our Organization Today
Each year, Demuth Museum of Art welcomes over 10,000 visitors across two locations and serves over 2,000 participants through educational programming and public outreach efforts. In addition to displaying Demuth's work, the organization annually mounts 15 special exhibitions, hosts a Community Art Exhibition, and displays local student artwork with the Lancaster County Young Artists Awards.
