Our Mission

The Demuth Foundation preserves and promotes the groundbreaking work of American Modern artist Charles Demuth; showcases the work of local, national, and international artists to the Lancaster community; and inspires new generations through its programs. The collections, exhibitions, educational programs, and public initiatives of our multiple facilities foster creativity and appreciation of art and artists.

Our History

In 1981, the Demuth Museum was founded, focusing on the life and work of one of the leading American Modernist painters, Charles Demuth (1883-1935), and his family. The Foundation maintains the 260+ year-old Demuth family properties in the heart of historic downtown Lancaster, which are contributing structures to a National Register Historic District and recognized as part of the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s Historic Artists’ Homes and Studios Program.

The Lancaster Museum of Art traces its roots back to 1965 when a group of local artists formed the Goethean Gallery on the campus of Franklin & Marshall College. In 1979, the Community Art Gallery took up residence in the former Grubb Mansion in Musser Park, and in 1996 became the Lancaster Museum of Art. It has a long-standing history of exhibiting local artists and offering educational workshops.

In 2014, the Demuth Museum and the Lancaster Museum of Art merged under one nonprofit structure. Both museums maintain separate facilities and collections, and share staff and a board of trustees.

Our Organization Today

The Demuth Museum and Lancaster Museum of Art welcome over 10,000 visitors each year and serve over 2,000 participants through its educational programs and public outreach efforts. About 50% of its audience is local with the remainder from the Mid-Atlantic region and beyond. Over 350 members support the Foundation's work and over 50% of income is derived from grants and donations.

The Demuth Foundation maintains the largest collection of Charles Demuth work, totaling over 60 original paintings, drawings, and watercolors. There is also an archive collection with ephemera, correspondence, and other objects related to Charles Demuth and his family. The Lancaster Museum of Art’s collection contains over 400 works, mostly from local and regional artists. The two museums mount an average of 15 special exhibitions annually in addition showcasing its collection, including the annual Community Art Exhibition now in its 63rd year and the Lancaster County Young Artist Awards, a juried show of local middle and high school artwork.
