Collection

The Demuth Museum of Art maintains the largest collection of Charles Demuth work, totaling over 60 original paintings, drawings, and watercolors. There is also an archive collection with ephemera, correspondence, and other objects related to Charles Demuth and his family. The Museum additionally holds a collection containing over 400 works primarily created by local and regional artists.

The Demuth Museum of Art features our Demuth works on rotation at our King Street location, and we display 8 to 12 works at a time. Charles Demuth frequently used paper to create his art, so the majority of our permanent collection is works on paper, including watercolors and drawings. Works on paper present limitations on their display, as paper fades and deteriorates over time. Therefore, in order to protect our collection of original Demuth works on paper, we only display each piece for a short period of time and rotate works out of special storage designed to preserve their condition as best as possible for future generations to enjoy and appreciate. We also control light exposure in our galleries through dimmers and motion sensors, and special light fixtures with UV filters for this reason.

The Museum’s additional collections, featuring more than 200 local and regional artists, are periodically displayed in special exhibitions at our Lime Street location.

Our full collection will soon be available to browse online - please check back periodically for updates.
