Creative Quarters features black and white photographs of the 60+ artists represented in Historic Artists' Homes and Studios (HAHS), a program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. This exhibition of images of 19th and 20th century artists from across the country with their homes, studios, and landscapes they worked in captures the historical evolution of art in the U.S. The artists of HAHS represent diverse styles and mediums, including painting, sculpture, graphic arts, photography, furniture, and decorative arts. The photographs featured in Creative Quarters allow viewers to deepen their understanding of the artists' lives, creative processes, and artwork. Capturing Community: Inside an American Salon

July 8 - September 24, 2023

This special exhibition explored Charles Demuth's peers in the Stieglitz Circle and their influential work that formed the American Modern Art movement in the early 20th century. Through loans from the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Art Bridges Collection, and private collections, 12 works of painting and photography are paired with pieces from the Demuth Museum collection to compare and contrast artists' styles and techniques. Capturing Community offers glimpses into the artists' lives and inspirations while telling the story of how they are all connected through one man -- Alfred Stieglitz.

This is one in a series of American art exhibitions created through a multi-year, multi-institutional partnership formed by the Philadelphia Museum of Art as part of the Art Bridges Cohort Program.

Demuth Invitational: Portraiture Through Artists’ Eyes

April 29 - June 25, 2023

Like many artists, throughout his lifetime Charles Demuth explored portraiture. His subjects ranged widely from friends and family to fictional characters in his literary illustrations, and his style included representational works and his pioneering poster portraits conveying likenesses in an abstract concept. For the 2023 Demuth Invitational exhibition, local artists will submit work that explore portraiture through their perspective and style.
