ART IN (AND OUT OF) A BOX NOW ON EXHIBITION
On November 23th, the Foundation’s successful “Art
in a Box” program – offering Charles Demuth’s
life and work to Lancaster County Schools’ students through
an innovative art education program – has resulted in
a unique exhibition. It features paintings by students from
several schools, reflecting their interpretations and unique
insights into Demuth’s art. Paintings by students from
Adamstown Elementary School, Carter and Macrae Elementary School,
Donegal Middle School, Elizabeth R. Martin Elementary School,
James Buchanan Elementary School, Lancaster Country Day School,
Rheems Elementary School, and South Lebanon Elementary School
are included in the exhibition.
Working with curriculum lesson plans, reproductions of paintings,
slides, and material about Demuth and his family, art teachers
have been introducing their students to Lancaster’s celebrated
artist during the fall semester, guiding them in approaching
Demuth’s art through their own responses to it.
The results are often startling, and we regret that the samples
printed here in black and white do not being to convey their
lush colors and strong statements.
The exhibition was made possible by a grant from the Lancaster
County Foundation, supplemented with funding from the Ressler
Mill Foundation.
It will run through December 29th.
“Art in a Box” kits are available, on loan and
free of charge, from the Demuth Foundation. For further details,
teachers may contact the Foundation at (717) 299-9940 or on
