This portrait, undated and unnamed by Demuth, is most likely of the Russian composer Igor Stravinsky. Stravinsky's music had a revolutionary impact on musical thought and his works remain touchstones of twentieth century modernism.

Demuth was in Paris and probably attended the premier of Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring by Sergey Diaglihev's Ballet Russe. This premier performance provoked the audience to riot and altered the way later musicians regarded rhythmic structure. Even today this performance in an imaginary Russia of ancient pagan rituals astounds audiences.
