In Lancaster County Courthouse Demuth utilizes those fundamental Precisionist elements of intersecting lines and angular planes to sketch out both architecture and rays of light as solid form. This work may have been made in preparation for the architectural oil, Welcome to Our City from 1921 which takes as its ostensible subject this same courthouse which stood less than a block from Demuth's home. Over the next decade, Demuth would find in the new industrial structures of his native city, along with its church steeples and domestic rooftops, a locus for his creation of a quintessential American art.
