East King Street, Lancaster, 1908-10

  • Charles Demuth
  • East King Street, Lancaster, 1908-10
  • watercolor on paper mounted on cardboard
  • 4-7/8 x 6-1/4 inches
  • Collection of the Demuth Museum, Lancaster, PA, gift of Robert F. Nation

This early watercolor, although executed after Demuth's return from his 1907 trip to Europe, still shows the strong influence of the Pennsylvania Academy. In 1908, the Academy held an exhibition of a group of artists known as The Eight or the Ashcan School, the majority of whom had graduated from the Academy. Reflecting the Ashcan movement's ideals of capturing the grit and motion of the streets in their works, Demuth evokes the feeling of the city street just outside of his home in Lancaster.
