Pink Tulips, 1930

  • Charles Demuth
  • Pink Tulips, 1930
  • watercolor and graphite on paper
  • 13-5/8 x 19-1/4 inches
  • Collection of the Demuth Museum, Lancaster, PA

Demuth's late floral works such as Pink Tulips contain that geometric formal construction that marked his concurrent precisionist architectural works in oil and tempera. They also employ a modern pictorial language in their asymmetrical composition, cut off by the picture edges.

Purportedly found on the artist's easel at the time of his death, this work had not been previously published and was exhibited only once prior to its purchase by the Demuth Museum - at Lancaster's Franklin and Marshall College in 1948.
