Mining the Collection: A Look at Prints

Master Printmaker Robert Patierno will talk about printmaking and help us explore the collection
Free for members, $5 for non-members

This exhibit features works from the Permanent Collection highlighting various types of printmaking including collograph, intaglio, lithograph, monotype, relief and screenprint.

Cherished Friends and Intimate Spaces, the Annual Invitational Exhibition

This year's Invitational includes new works from over thirty-five contemporary artists from Lancaster and the surrounding region. The theme is based on the many times Charles Demuth captured a gathering of his close friends in watercolor or sketches.

Scholastic Art Awards

On View: March 7 - April 12, 2015

Scholastics is the first level of a national art competition. Exceptional works of art are submitted by hundreds of students to be judged first at the regional level here in Lancaster, with winning works moving on to the national competition. Works winning Gold Keys, Silver Keys and Honorable Mention are on display in this exhibition.

Ben Herr: Condemned to Freedom

On View: April 25 - June 21, 2015

The Demuth Museum and the Lancaster Museum of Art will host a special retrospective exhibition focusing on Lancaster's own Ben Herr. Unique examples of Herr's work spanning his entire oeuvre are featured; from his teenage days in Lancaster through his time at the Pennsylvania Museum School of Art, which was a hotbed of Abstract Expressionist artists to pictures completed in January 2015. This expansive retrospective allows for the first time a complete understanding of Herr's work.

Demuth on the Mad Cape - Cape Cod

On View: June 27 - August 30, 2015

This exhibition explores artwork created by Charles Demuth during his summer stays in Provincetown, Massachusetts. Scenes of the bay, the beach and sailboats, as well as the architecture of houses, rooftops and local landmarks inspired Demuth's masterful watercolors of this artist colony.

53rd Annual Community Art Exhibition

July 10 - August 23, 2015
Opening Reception: Friday, July 10 from 5:00 - 8:00pm

This annual juried exhibition celebrates the vast amount of artistic talent found throughout Lancaster County. Artworks by over 100 artists will be on view, including paintings, drawings, ceramics, sculpture, metals, carved wood and mixed media. Awards include First, Second and Third Place as well as Honorable Mention and the People's Choice Award, voted for by visitors to the exhibit.

Market Daze: Central Market in the '70s

The Demuth Museum is pleased to present Gail Gray's pencil drawings of people in Lancaster's Central Market in the early seventies. This group of drawings captures a wonderful moment in time of this beloved city icon. A bustling hub of downtown activity continues to this day to thrive as a lively farmer's market. While stand holders change and the type of food and goods offered evolve over time, there are still many of the same stands and stand holders in 2015 as there were forty years ago.

Masks of Mexico

September 12 - November 8, 2015

The Lancaster Museum of Art is pleased to announce our next exhibition, Masks of Mexico. This exhibit focuses on the masks that are used in the many rituals and celebrations performed in the cities and small rural villages throughout Mexico's various states. The majority of states with traditions of using masks are represented in this exhibit through more than 200 masks. Grouping all these works together reveal the various forms, styles and colors that Mexican carvers employ. The masks are made from carved wood, papier-mache, leather, cloth, ceramic, metal and other materials and display the range in skill of the artists from untrained to professional carvers.

John Weaver: A Morning Walk

October 3 - November 29, 2015

This exhibit featured the work of John Weaver, a Lancaster County native. Each day, Weaver sets out on an early morning walk armed only with canvas, paint box and brushes and creates a picture on 5 x 7 canvas. The exhibition also included examples of Weaver's use of the iPad brushes app, as well as ink drawings the artist created while on his morning walks.

14th Annual Art in a Box

December 6 - 27, 2015

This annual exhibit features student artworks from schools participating in the Demuth's education program, Art in a Box, which teaches these aspiring artists about Demuth's pioneering artwork and life in Lancaster. Over 115 student artworks will be on view.
