An Architect's Influence, The Annual Demuth Invitational

This year's Invitational features the work of thirty-five local artists who have created works based on this year's theme of architects. Charles Demuth (1883-1935) interacted with several architects throughout his artistic career. Similarly, this exhibit focuses on how artists may be inspired by an architect with whom they have studied or worked.

Demuth Focus Exhibit with New Acquisitions/Unveiling

This exhibition explores the impact of Charles Demuth's summers in Provincetown on his art work and features two new acquisitions to the permanent collection of the Demuth Museum.

A Moment In Time: The Paintings of Hubert J. FitzGerald

On View: April 15 - July 1, 2012

This exhibit explores the impact of FitzGerald's artistic life on his day job creating flooring tiles for Armstrong. The textures that came naturally in the paintings of FitzGerald, a classmate of Andy Warhol, are translated into some of the most common floor designs used in the United States and globally.

Becoming Modern: The Travel Drawings of Louis I. Kahn & Charles Demuth

On View: July 15 - September 30, 2012

This exhibition features the travel drawings of Louis I. Kahn, famed American architect best known for the Salk Institute, the Kimbell Art Museum and Yale University Art Gallery, as well as Charles Demuth, renowned American Modernist painter. Both artists took advantage of opportunities to travel the world in the early twentieth century and gather experiences that would impact the development of their own unique styles which will be explored in over 30 charcoal, graphite, pastel and watercolor drawings from both artists.

Victoria Sambunaris: Infinite/Ubiquitous

Victoria Sambunaris' photographs are the product of ten years worth of yearly journeys across America. Her fascination with the American landscape began in her hometown of Lancaster, PA, where Sambunaris was preoccupied with how we, as humans, transform the vastness of the American landscape, by manipulating it and situating ourselves within it.

The Demuth Museum, in collaboration with, is mounting an insightful and expansive exhibition about portraiture in Lancaster. Our exhibit will revisit a landmark exhibition held at the Woolworth Building here in Lancaster in 1912 which showcased over 200 historical and contemporary oil portraits of Lancastrians. Our exhibit will include a selection of these portraits as well as examples from the past century and contemporary photographic portraits to convey the themes and practices of portraiture in Lancaster.

11th Annual Art In A Box Exhibition

December 2-29, 2012
Opening Reception: Sunday, December 2, 1-3 p.m.

This annual exhibit features student artworks from schools participating in the Demuth's education program, Art in a Box, which teaches these aspiring artists about Demuth's pioneering artwork and life in Lancaster.

Over 150 area students will display their Demuth-inspired artworks in the Art in a Box exhibition, including elementary through high school participants. School districts contributing to this year's exhibition include: Buchanan Elementary School, East York Elementary, Lancaster Country Day School, Landisville Primary Center, Reynolds Middle School and Solanco High School.
