Demuth returned to Lancaster after completing his studies at the Academy and began to create those floral watercolor works, inspired by his mother Augusta's garden that would span his career. During this decade, Demuth also produced a series of figurative works based on vaudeville performances he saw at Lancaster's Colonial Theater and Fulton Opera House. He also created a series of "literary illustrations" derived from contemporary novels and stories by Henry James, Emile Zola and others.
