Demuth embarked on his longest European stay in December of 1912, remaining abroad through the Spring of 1914. During this time he made the acquaintance of Marsden Hartley, Gertrude Stein and Edward Fisk and engaged more directly with the work of his European contemporaries. In Paris, he took drawing classes at the Académie Moderne, Académie Colarossi and Académie Julien.
