Demuth traveled to Bermuda in early 1917, joining fellow artist Marsden Hartley who had arrived several months before. Demuth began a series of architectural and landscape works, exploring the modernist principles of Cezanne and the Cubists in a melding of geometric and organic forms. He also experimented with those formal elements that would be further developed in his later Precisionist works. These works were exhibited in the Fall of 1917, in a two-person show at the Daniel Gallery with Edward Fisk.
