While Demuth made Lancaster his primary home after completing his studies at the Academy, he traveled regularly to Philadelphia, Provincetown and New York throughout the 1910's and 1920's. In New York, he often stayed at the Brevoort Hotel. In the winter of 1915-16 Demuth rented an apartment on Washington Square South in New York's Greenwich Village. Demuth was part of its bohemian community of artists, writers and intellectuals and depicted scenes of its members' frequent gatherings in the city's basement bars and newly emerging jazz clubs.
