Randy Weavers City Garden on West Marion Street, Included on This Years
Tour |
The Demuth Foundation has engaged sixteen superb gardens
to please art lovers and gardeners alike. Sites include
hidden city gardens that create outdoor rooms in diminutive
spaces; a two-century-old farm inhabited by the same family
for nine generations; suburban gardens that cope practically
as well as beautifully with the issues of shade and privacy;
and an elegant and hospitable country estate. These and
several other gardens reflect the influence of artists
eyes and gardeners loving labor. As usual, the owners
and gardeners will be present to share their enthusiasm
and knowledge. Long considered the premiere garden tour
in this area, the Demuth Tour deserves the accolade, for
both the longevity and the variety and quality of the
gardens included. The self-guided tour can begin at any
point, and tickets (priced at $10 in advance, $12 on the
day of the tour) are good for both days. Directions and
a map will be provided with the tickets. Again this year,
the tour weekend begins with a Gala Garden Party at Conestoga
House on Friday, June 11th, that includes live music,
gourmet hors doeuvres, punch, cash bar, a garden
gear raffle, a plant sale, and original work by local
artists available for purchase. (Attendance is limited
to 200 people, by advance reservation, at $35 each). At
the Foundation, where the Demuth gardens have been restored
to approximate their appearance during the artists
life, a selection of Charles Demuths work will be
on display over the weekend. Tickets may be purchased
in advance by telephoning the Foundation at 299-9940,
or by sending in the reservation forms distributed by
mail last month. |
